Elle Kennedy has once again proven that she is the queen of writing college hockey romances in her latest book, “The Graham Effect.”
This book is the first in her new “Campus Diaries” series and showcases how skilled Kennedy is at writing an addicting first book of a series.
The plot follows Gigi Graham– Hannah and Garrett’s daughter– as she plays on Briar’s women’s hockey team while pursuing her dream of making the women’s national hockey team. Her path intertwines with Luke Ryder, Briar’s new hockey co-captain, who finds himself in a coaching arrangement with Gigi. Their relationship, filled with palpable chemistry and undeniable attraction, unfolds amidst the challenges of the men’s merged team and Ryder’s tarnished reputation.
One of the highlights of the book is its well-crafted characters. Gigi, while distinctly her own person, carries the spirit of her father, Garrett Graham, adding a nostalgic touch for fans of the “Off-Campus” series. Ryder, initially portrayed as grumpy and opinionated, undergoes a heartwarming transformation as his relationship with Gigi develops. Their honesty and communication contribute to the depth of their connection, making them compelling protagonists.
Additionally, Kennedy introduces a new gang of characters in this book, each well-developed and realistic. The intricate relationships between characters draw readers in and keep them wondering who the next book in the series will be about.
Kennedy’s talent for infusing humor and camaraderie among the characters stands out in this book, mirroring the success of the “Off-Campus” series. The banter and interactions between Gigi, Ryder, and the supporting cast contribute to the overall charm of the story, making it a funny and engaging read.
The book successfully balances moments featuring the beloved “Off-Campus” characters without overshadowing Gigi’s story. This creates a narrative that feels both familiar and fresh, seamlessly integrating new characters into the established Briar world while igniting nostalgia in readers.
At 498 pages, this book is much longer than the typical contemporary romance novel. At times, the length is a weakness of the story, slowing the pacing and creating moments of lull. However, other times, readers are left wanting more than Kennedy gives.
“The Graham Effect” captures the essence of the “Off-Campus” series while introducing a new generation of characters and storylines. Gigi and Ryder’s dynamic, complemented by the well-developed supporting cast, sets the stage for future installments that fans will undoubtedly eagerly await.
